Disability & Inclusion Workshop

Join the Fort Atkinson Club for this important morning workshop. We will focus on ways to foster more equitable and accessible workplaces, schools, and communities – starting with one person at a time. This FREE, public event is made possible for the Fort Atkinson community through a grant from the Wisconsin Board for People with Developmental Disabilities (BPDD). All are welcome to attend.

Topics will include:
Understanding Disability
- Types of Disabilities: There are various types of disabilities, including physical, sensory, intellectual, and mental health disabilities. All are not the same.
- Etiquette and Language: Examples of respectful language and appropriate behavior when interacting with people with disabilities.
Legal Framework
- Laws and Regulations: Overview of relevant laws, such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in the U.S., or equivalent legislation in other countries.
- Rights and Responsibilities: Understanding the rights of individuals with disabilities and the obligations of organizations to ensure accessibility and accommodation.
Inclusive Practices
- Diversity and Inclusion: Emphasizing the importance of diversity and creating an inclusive culture that values all individuals.
- Bias and Unconscious Bias: Identifying and addressing unconscious biases that might affect interactions with people with disabilities.
Communication Skills
- Effective Communication: Techniques for clear and respectful communication, including understanding and using alternative communication methods when necessary.
- Listening and Feedback: Encouraging open dialogue and feedback to better understand and address the needs of individuals with disabilities.
Action Planning
- Implementing Changes: Developing action plans to improve accessibility and inclusion within the community.
- Monitoring and Evaluation: Setting up mechanisms to regularly review and improve accessibility and inclusion efforts.
Resources and Support
- Local and Online Resources: Providing information on additional resources, organizations, and support networks.
- Support Systems: Establishing internal support systems and contacts for individuals needing accommodation or assistance.
